Most of us think that seeing and perceiving are the same thing. We open our eyes, light enters them, and we assume our brain simply records what’s in front of us. But that’s not actually how visual perception works.

What Visual Perception Actually Is

Seeing is the physical process. Light enters your eyes, is focused onto the retina and converted into electrical signals that travel to the brain. Perception is what happens next.

Your brain analyses those signals, identifies shapes, colours, movement, depth and objects, then combines them into a picture that makes sense. Within fractions of a second, it decides what you’re looking at, how far away it is, whether it’s moving and whether it’s important enough to pay attention to.

In other words, your eyes collect information, but your brain creates your experience of reality.

The Brain as a Prediction Machine, Not a Camera

Many people imagine the brain works like a camera, recording everything exactly as it appears. In reality, it’s much closer to a prediction machine.

Your brain constantly combines incoming visual information with previous knowledge to build its best guess of what’s happening around you. Rather than processing every tiny detail from scratch, it relies on shortcuts based on experience.

For example, imagine you’re looking at a shaded sphere. Without realising it, your brain assumes light usually comes from above because that’s how sunlight and indoor lighting typically behave. That assumption helps it decide whether the sphere appears to bulge outwards or curve inwards. If the lighting is reversed, your brain can interpret the exact same image completely differently.

These predictions make perception incredibly fast and efficient, but they also explain why our brains can sometimes be fooled.

Why Context Changes What You “See”

One of the most remarkable features of perception is that what surrounds an object changes how we experience it.

A grey square placed on a dark background often appears lighter than the identical grey square placed on a white background. Similarly, two objects of exactly the same size can appear dramatically different depending on the size of the objects around them.

Your brain isn’t judging colours or sizes in isolation. Instead, it’s constantly comparing everything within a scene to create contrast and meaning. This ability is enormously useful in everyday life. It helps us recognise faces in different lighting conditions, judge distances while walking and quickly spot objects in busy environments. However, these same shortcuts also make us vulnerable to visual tricks and illusions.

When Perception Gets It Wrong

Most people associate perception errors with optical illusions, but they happen far more often than we realise.

Road markings are deliberately designed to influence how drivers judge speed. Architects use perspective to make buildings appear taller, wider or more imposing. Interior designers manipulate lighting, mirrors and colour to make rooms feel larger than they really are. Even something as simple as watching a film demonstrates how your brain fills in missing information. A series of still images shown rapidly creates the convincing illusion of continuous movement.

Optical illusions simply exaggerate these everyday processes, making them easier to observe.
